Watford UK, 24th February 2005. Hyperion Systems Engineering Ltd, which provides high quality custom made solutions and services to process industries worldwide, has announced the successful implementation of a Training Simulator at the In Salah Gas Plant in Krechba, Algeria, which resulted in a smooth start-up of this major project for BP / Sonatrach / Statoil...

The Operator Training System was implemented in order to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the plant during start-up and initial operations, through effective training of operations staff and the avoidance of errors caused by lack of familiarisation. This first objective was recently achieved, and the first gas deliveries started on July 18th 2004.

The implementation was carried out by specialists from Hyperion Systems Engineering and comprised HYSYS and OTISS software solutions for process modelling and for the Emergency Shut-Down (ESD) system together with an emulated Yokogawa DCS system. Hyperion consultants were responsible for most of the implementation including the DCS and ESD logic and integration, implementation of the training stations, systems acceptance and on-site systems training.

Lotfi Benadouda, Operations Excellence Superintendent at In Salah, said “The experience of the Hyperion specialists has contributed towards a very smooth start-up of the simulator, without any operator errors. Their dedication and commitment has ensured that the Operator Training Simulator (OTS) was implemented on-time which allowed us to complete the basic training of all of the operators well in advance of start-up. Now we are looking forward to extending the use of the OTS for training in more extreme conditions, plant optimisation and other advanced scenarios.”

Operator Training Systems are critical to the operation of complex process plants and result in fewer operating errors and quicker and safer startups and shutdowns. They improve plant reliability due to improved response to abnormal situations, optimize throughput and product quality, and provide the basis for evaluation of control strategies.
