Hyperion Delivers Turn-Key Operator Training Simulator (OTS) for a CCR Unit at Hellenic Petroleum Thessaloniki Refinery, Greece

Hyperion Systems Engineering Ltd. the leading independent solutions provider to the global process announced the successful delivery of a high fidelity Operator Training Simulator (OTS) system for the new CCR Reforming Unit development for the Hellenic Petroleum Refining Complex in Thessaloniki, Greece.

The Thessaloniki refinery is one of the three refineries owned and operated by Hellenic Petroleum in Greece, a fourth one is located in FYROM. The new OTS system consisted of the process models, emergency safety system, DCS, DCS control logics, Instructor/FOD station and local panels.

Hyperion developed a high fidelity dynamic model of the CCR complex which included models of the CCR reactor, Regenerator, Catalyst moving bed transfer, turbine driven centrifugal recycle compressor, Hydrogen compressor, Stabilizer column, Steam generation boiler and the Regeneration loop compressor. The DCS system was an emulation of the Honeywell Experion Human Machine Interface (HMI) to provide the Operator training functions required.

Hyperion’s turn-key responsibilities on the project included:

  • Development of rigorous process models
  • Development of ESD
  • Integrating the process models with an emulation of Honeywell Experion DCS
  • Development of the Instructor and Field-Operator stations
  • Development of appropriate panels
  • Supply of trainee/operator consoles using the actual plant graphics
  • Hardware and software procurements
  • Installation and commissioning at site
  • Provision of appropriate training and documentation (manuals and specifications)

 

Other technical characteristics of the project included the enchantment of the simulator by adding special malfunctions and other scenarios for daily operational challenges, as well as added functionality around the catalyst circulation batch sequence.

The OTS provided a further in-depth view of the new CCR project and its emergency safety system which allowed Hellenic Petroleum’s newly hired and inexperienced Human resources team to train how to efficiently and effectively operate the plant, through the acquisition of a thorough understanding of the Unit and its daily and abnormal operations

Benefits provided to HELPE Thessaloniki Refinery also came from the provision of a safety system design validation, which allows them to discover a variety of issues.

Hyperion to supply Operator Training Simulator for India’s largest Ethylene plant

Nicosia, Cyprus. 18th January 2011. Hyperion Systems Engineering Ltd (Hyperion), the leading independent simulation solutions provider, announced today that it will supply the Operator Training Simulator for an ethylene plant to be built in Dahej, India.

Together with consortium partner Samsung Engineering of Korea, The Linde Group will build the turnkey plant for India’s ONGC Petro-additions Ltd. (OPaL). When it comes on-line in late 2012, Dahej will be India’s largest ethylene plant, and the anchor of a larger petrochemical complex.

The Operator Training Simulator contract was awarded to Hyperion by The Linde Group. Hyperion’s project scope includes the design and delivery of an Operator Training Simulator system for the Dual Feed Cracker Unit (DFCU) and Extraction Units.

Hyperion Delivers Turn-Key Operator Training Simulator (OTS) for a Fluid Catalytic Cracker Unit at Preem AB in Sweden

Nicosia, Cyprus. 10th December 2010. Hyperion Systems Engineering Ltd (Hyperion), the leading independent simulation solutions provider, announced the successful delivery of a Fluid Catalytic Cracker Unit (FCCU) Operator Training Simulator (OTS) system at Preem Petroleum’s Lysekil refinery in Sweden (also known as Preemraff). This is the second OTS provided to Preem by Hyperion, the first having been delivered for the Propylene Unit at Lysekil refinery in 2008. As a result of the significant benefits derived from that initial project, the FCCU OTS was commissioned in order to extend the operator training potential so that the combined simulator capability now represents an entire DCS panel in the main control room.

The Preemraff refinery is the largest oil refinery in Sweden, and one of the biggest in Europe. The new OTS system is a key part of the drive to sustain and improve operational excellence through the use of dynamic process simulation. The OTS will be used for operator training, control system check out, and ongoing engineering and operational analyses.

Hyperion developed a high-fidelity HYSYS® dynamic model of the FCCU which included models of the FCC reactor, fractionator, LCO/HCN strippers, wet gas compressor, primary and secondary absorbers, stripper, debutanizer, C3/C4 splitter, and de-ethaniser. The dynamic models were integrated by Hyperion with DYNSIM® and DeltaV Simulate to provide the Operator Training Simulator functions required.   .

Hyperion announces NEW upgraded interface to Yokogawa Centum DCS

Hyperion Systems Engineering (Hyperion), the leading independent solutions provider to the global process industry announced today the release of a major upgrade to its own-developed interface to the Yokogawa Centum DCS platform which was first announced in 2007.

Over the last 3 years the company has been developing the software tool adding further capability and enhancements across its successful deployment in a significant number of simulator projects.

New features of the interface include:

  • Added support for the integrated safety system Prosafe-RS which is increasingly popular feature of Yokogawa DCS’s.
  • Displays for Field Bus devices are fully functional, with control calculations being performed by blocks in the process model.
  • Maximum number of controllers (FCS and SCS) has been increased by 50%, and now supports up to 48 controllers.
  • Hardware alarms for all control functions can be configured and controlled by the instructor. This is an important feature as the safety system includes checks on transmitter health as part of logic.
  • Record and Replay of Operator actions. Significant Operator actions are recorded in a journal which can be edited, and replayed. This can be used to automate operator actions, or as part of a training exercise.
  • Originally developed for CS3000, updated and verified on the latest version CENTUM-VP

Spreadsheet tool has simple configuration block allowing the engineer to select variables within each block control type. This has been used to preserve controller tuning constants, when models are updated.

New DCS start up and health monitoring tool, this provides a visual indication of progress and state of each controller. It also has support for multiple DCS hardware configurations making it easy to switch between process sections.
